Two of the best things you can do right now are RAM and SSD upgrades. The old rule of 4GB of ram doesn’t work smoothly now. The web etc. is a thirsty beast and can eat up any memory you have. 6-8GB is now the norm and can easily be fitted.
SSD (Solid State Drive) is the newer replacement for the old hard drive. It’s all chips and no moving parts so many times faster. Usually a direct swap and will transform your machine more than any other hardware upgrade. Trust me, once you go SSD you will not want to go back. Your machine will boot up in seconds not minutes and software will open so fast you won’t see the egg timer.
Don’t worry about runaway costs. I always consider the cost/value of the existing PC/laptop in terms of what is viable to spend on it. If it’s better to just get a new one, I will tell you. I will also know if it’s been dropped, sat on or dunked in the sink.
